Roman Emperor Theodosius I coin

The Olympic Games were founded by Heracles (the Roman Hercules), a son of Zeus. The first Olympic Games for which there are written records were held in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC (though it is generally believed that the Games had been going on for many years already). The Games grew and continued to be played every four years (an Olympiad) for nearly 1200 years until The Romans, who conquered Greece, viewed the Olympics as a pagan festival. Dude!!!

So, in AD 393, Roman Emperor Theodosius I banned the Ancient Olympics in part to institute Christianity as a state religion. The Olympics was no more … until it was revived 1,500 years later in 1896. More interesting facts about The Ancient Olympic Games
